 1. Short Introduction of Agriculture Component

  Agriculture scenario of Assam: Agriculture is one of the major department of Assam having more than 5000 field workers who are directly deal with extension work. Assam is predominantly rural and the economy primarily agrarian in nature with almost 70% of the population directly dependent on Agriculture as a source of income and another 15% of the population dependent on allied activities for its living.

Development of agriculture in Assam since independence, the scenario in terms of productivity and production has been mixed. Though we have achieved self-sufficiency in rice, the staple crop, fruits & vegetables, but we still have a shortfall in overall requirement of oilseed, pulses and wheat.
 


  2. Highlights of Achievements under ARIAS:
  • 70,450 nos STW was installed during ARIAS
  • 554 Tractors & 1500 Power Tillers were distributed under Mechanization Prog.
  • 23 Progeny Orchards (PO) were developed & 16 leased out to private parties.
  • 7 Farmer Training Hostels were built to enhanced capacity of Farmers.
  • Extension Training Centre at Naltali, Nagaon was up graded as apex training institute of Assam.
  • 8 new Sub-divisional offices were created for better extension services.
  • 7,976 Field demonstrations were conducted.
  • Service of National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad was utilized for capacity building of Field Management committees (FMCs)

 
 3. Major items/ activities proposed under AACP:

  1. Mechanization Prog.- 750 Tractors & 1500 Power Tillers will be distributed among FMC/Agriculture Service Groups (ASGs).
  2. Irrigation- 60,000 STW will be distributed among FMCs/ASG. Low Lift Pump (LLP)- 20,000 LLP will be distributed among FMC /ASG, where STW is not feasible. Sprinkler Irrigation- 200 ha. targeted for Mustard & Pulses growing area where STW is existed under this component @ 4,500/ha cost. Land Development- 20,000 ha. will be developed @ 2,000/ha. Cost.
  3. Agricultural Extension Service {Agricultural Technology Management Agency(ATMA)}- It is proposed to pilot ATMA model in 11 district in phase manner – initially in two districts namely, Kamrup and Nagaon in first phase. Jorhat, Hailakandi, Barpeta and Sonitpur districts in the 2nd phase and in five districts viz Nalbari, Dhubri, Dhemaji, Karbi Anglong and Dibrugarh in 3rd phase.
  4. Market Development- Under this Sub-component, it is proposed to upgrade infrastructure facilities of 50 local “haats” and 24 rural wholesale markets.
