Forest Department

1. Short Introduction of Forest Component

The Forest Department is primarily responsible for management of Forests and Wildlife in the State which has 35.48 % of its total geographical area under forests. The Department has three executive wings at the field level: -

  1. Territorial Divisions – Headed by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), they are entrusted with the task of protection and improvement of forests and plantations as well as enforcement of laws related to forests/wildlife. Besides this, operation of quarries of minor minerals and collection of Non Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) is also regulated by them.

  2. Social Forestry Divisions – Headed by DFO, they carry out the plantations on community/Government land. Of late, they have been designated as Forest Development Agencies (FDA) a la District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) to improve the livelihoods of fringe villagers through Joint Forest Management (JFM).

  3. Wildlife Divisions/Wildlife Sanctuaries/National Parks – With DFO/Director at the helm, they are mandated with the management of wildlife/protected areas.

2. Area of operation of Forest Component under AACP

The AACP component for Forestry sector is basically a Pilot Project confined to two territorial Divisions –

  1. Kamrup West Division, Bamunigaon (Guwahati)

  2. Nagaon South Division, Hojai.

The name of the Project has been christened as “Natural Resource Management and Integrated Livelihoods (NaRMIL)”. As the name suggests, its twin objectives are –

  1. Conservation of natural resources/forests

  2. Upliftment of communities through Joint Forest Management.

Not applicable as the Forestry component was not a part of ARIAS. It has been included in AACP only.
